2012 Fisker Karma Sunset Convertible - Feature

What it is: A two-door hardtop-convertible version of the delayed Karma series-hybrid sedan.

Why it matters: It’s a “green” car with the power to delight tree-hugging enthusiasts.

Platform: The Sunset shares its aluminum space-frame platform with the Karma sedan.

Powertrain: Fisker’s so-called Q-Drive series-hybrid powertrain consists of two electric motors (combined output: 402 horsepower and 960 pound-feet of torque) that power the rear wheels, and a 260-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The engine fires when the batteries run out of juice to extend the range up to 250 miles.

Competition: Tesla Roadster.

What might go wrong: This is a convertible version of a car that is currently late getting into production. (Fisker has yet to build a car despite ahalf-billion-dollar loan from the U.S. government.)
The car in question, the Fisker Karma sedan, is a year behind its scheduled 2010 on-sale date. And, should the $87,900 Karma sedan fail to find buyers, Fisker probably won’t be in a hurry to build a convertible version.

Estimated arrival and cost: Slight chance of a 2012 arrival with a price tag of about $120,000. Learn More...
